According to the Mirror, eternal rivals Liverpool and Everton are set to engage in a tussle for the signing of Werder Bremen striker Maxi Kruse.
The Reds are keen on adding another player to their star-packed attacking lineup, but they will have to beat Everton to landing the £13million-rated Kruse.
The Germany international recorded a personal season-best of 15 Bundesliga goals last term, while he assisted 7 others.
The 29-year-old has 2 years on his current deal, but could be tempted into moving to play outside of his home country for the first time.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp currently makes use of Roberto Firmino – primarily a winger as a makeshift number 9, and wouldn’t mind having a natural striker added to the frontline.
Dominic Solanke, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge are expected to battle it out for the role of 2nd-choice striker next season, but Kruse could give them, and even the Brazilian forward a run for the money if signed as he offers something unique.
He could be manager Jurgen Klopp’s plan B and joker if the need arises to switch to a more direct or different approach in games.
Kruse’s passes, ability to hold on to the ball, and physicality are qualities that can be deployed in another type of striking system for Liverpool, but Everton are firmly in their way for his services.
