Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side continued preparations for the new season by remaining unbeaten with victory over Bradford in West Yorkshire on Wednesday. The Magpies came away 0-4 winners, and he are three thoughts from the match:
Murphy shows off
The new signing has absolutely hit the ground running by the looks of it. Jacob Murphy, recently bought from Norwich, got off to a brilliant start to grab two goals in the rout. Murphy got his first after a great, mazy run and a tremendous finish to go along with it.
On top of that, he also showed the improvisation necessary to be a top scorer when he hammered home on the half volley for his second.
Shelvey deadly
Englishman Jonjo Shelvey is very enigmatic. He’s also very up and down, but when he’s given time and space he’s absolutely a massive threat. Newcastle have to find creative ways to get him space, because he can create all sorts of danger with his passing.
He’s also incredibly good from long range with his shooting power and accuracy, so there is also that involved. This is where the likes of Murphy come in. With strong performances from the winger, Shelvey will benefit. That must be a priority going forward.
Manquillo solid
If anyone thought that the signing of Javier Manquillo was one centered around the idea of pomp and circumstance, they would have been wrong. In the Spanish full back, you get solidity and a known quantity, but not much else.
This match proved that once again, and it will just have to be accepted by fans of the northeast club. Manquillo is going to play steady defence, but he just won’t be a huge threat going forward or anyone that will stand out.
