This Wednesday, July 26, 2017 (4:30 PM Pacific) Atletico Zacatepec will play Cruz Azul at the Estadio Agustin Coruco Diaz for a match in week 1 of the Copa MX. Cruz Azul is the clear favorite to take the three points from the game but it should still prove to be an intriguing encounter.
Zacatepec is coming from a scoreless draw against Tampico Madero away from home in the first round of the Ascenso MX Apertura 2017. In the offseason, the team from Morelos disappeared but then found new life as Coras FC was transferred over to create Atletico Zacatepec. The Ascenso side is led by 30-year-old Marcelo Michel Leano at the helm, who led Coras FC to a shocking victory against Club America in the Clausura 2017 edition of the Copa MX. Some of the club’s more notable players like Cristian Ivanobski and Daniel Rios are unlikely to start in this game but some former Chivas’ players like Victor Hugo Hernandez and Alejandro Zendejas may feature in the encounter. This will be a tough task for the second division side but it should still be an entertaining game.
Cruz Azul is coming off a promising 2-0 win against Club Tijuana away from home, where two goals by fresh signing Edgar Mendez made the difference in the game. Paco Jemez displayed immense interest in the Copa MX competition last season and is likely to use starters and really go for it again in this season. Some key players like Edgar Mendez or Angel Mena may get minutes throughout this tournament but some youngsters should also feature as well. It will be interesting to see if Jemez debuts Felipe Mora in this game as he did not feature in the game against Xolos, despite being on the bench. Los Cementeros should win this game comfortably even if they are playing away from home and the game should be a hard-fought clash.
