Aston Villa traveled to Montgomery Waters Memorial Stadium on Saturday to take on League Two side Shrewsbury Town in a friendly and the match will be best known for the debut of veteran center back John Terry for his new club.

The former Chelsea man made his bow with his new club, and he looked every bit the player he was hoped to be. Terry, the club’s new captain despite having never featured for the team, looked composed and just what Villa needed.

But all of that came crumbling apart upon the Englishman’s departure on 61 minutes. Suddenly they looked like the team that finished mid table in the Championship last term and that just won’t do.

Thankfully, though, this was just a friendly and this is all about preparing for the season to come. Villa fell 2-1 to a side that they should feel they can beat no matter which side they choose to select.

For once though, Villa have positives to look at as they know their new captain will help bring solidity to the team and its back line with his leadership and experience.
