When news of Brendan Rodgers’ son Anton joining up with Celtic hit the wire, there was surprise all around from a number of supporters and fans of football in general alike. Why on earth had the former Swindon Town man been included? Surely he wouldn’t play.
But that second part turned out to be wrong as he turned out for Celtic on Wednesday in their friendly against BW Linz. The Austrian second division side welcomed the Hoops in, and would fall 0-1 to the Scottish treble winners.
The elder Rodgers explained, according to the Daily Record, that Anton had “come with us… just to get fit really.
He then went on to say that injuries gave him a chance to play, saying “we had a few injuries to our midfield players; Eboue Kouassi and Kristoffer Ajer were injured. So I know he can play.”
This might anger Celtic fans a little, but in reality there were few options to play as he didn’t want the regulars to play too much this early in the preseason. So there are the answers, and maybe it will be the last time we hear of Anton for a while!
