This Wednesday, June 21, 2017 (8:00 AM Pacific) Russia will host Portugal at the Otkrytiye Arena in Moscow, Russia for a group stage match in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Both teams are in the contested Group A of the competition and need the three points from the encounter.
Russia got off to a tremendous start to the 2017 Confederations Cup by defeating New Zealand by a score of 2-0. An own goal by New Zealand and a 69th-minute goal by Krasnodar’s, Fyodor Smolov were the deciding moments in the game. The hosts were the favorites to win that game but it was still a solid showing by the European side. Russia is not the favorite in this match against Portugal but should still be able to produce a hard-fought contest.
Portugal did not have as great of a start as Russia, drawing 2-2 to Mexico in its first game. The game was one that Portugal could have easily won had it not been for missed opportunities and the implemented technology used by FIFA. Cristiano Ronaldo looked in top form in the match, getting an assist and being the instrumental component of Fernando Santos’ team. The players that did get on the scoreline against Mexico were the experienced winger, Ricardo Quaresma and the defender, Cedric. Portugal must win this game to have a chance at qualifying for the next round of the competition but should have a tough match against the hosts, Russia.
