Rangers will not attempt to sign 23-year-old Mexican despite President’s comments

According to reports, Rangers will not attempt to sign Jose Javier Abella despite Santos Laguna club president Alejandro Irarrogorri having indicated that a deal for the player between the two clubs was close to being complete.

Had the deal gone ahead, Abella would have linked up with his fellow Mexican internationals Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera, who are expected to officially join the Gers after receiving work permits.

Irarrogorri had said about Abella, “I talk a lot with Pedro Caixinha and he has good reason for taking the two Mexicans to Scottish football. And there is a player at Santos that interests him. We are in negotiations about him.”

However it has since been confirmed that despite Irarrogorri’s comments, Abella will not be moving to Rangers at this point in time. Thus far the Ibrox side have recruited Ryan Jack, Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso and also signed Dalcio on a season long loan from Benfica.
