This Thursday, June 8, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific) Mexico will host Honduras at the Estadio Azteca for a match in the fifth round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. The game should be an exciting one between two teams that are traditionally considered rivals and always have competitive encounters.
Mexico is going into this game flying high with 10 points in the hexagonal stage of the competition. Last time the two teams faced each other they had a scoreless draw at the Estadio Azteca in the fourth round of the World Cup qualifiers. Before that Mexico had a comfortable 2-0 win away from home in Honduras in the same fourth round of the competition. El Tri will have the advantage playing in front of the home crowd and having the much more talented squad. Juan Carlos Osorio will have some intriguing options for the game like Jorge Hernandez but will count mostly with household names like Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela, Andres Guardado and Jesus Manuel Corona. Mexico should come out on top and avoid an embarrassing result in front of a sold-out crowd at the Estadio Azteca.
Honduras has been struggling in the hexagonal stage of the competition, currently in fifth place with only four points. The Central American side did manage to get a point last time it played at the Azteca and a similar result would not be bad this Thursday. Jorge Luis Pinto counts with mostly players who play domestically with a few exceptions. There are two players on the squad who militate in Mexico in Necaxa’s, Bryan Beckeles and Correcaminos’, Johnny Leveron. The match will be a difficult one for Los Catrachos but the encounter should still be a hard-fought one at the Estadio Azteca.
