It has been over a decade since Chivas of Guadalajara has won a Liga MX title. Chivas is in the final in the Clausura 2017 and will face Tigres UANL to try and get their twelfth Liga MX trophy. Guadalajara’s last championship came in the Apertura 2006 competition, where Los Rojiblancos defeated Toluca to get their eleventh Liga MX title. The world was a different place in 2006: here is what it was like when Chivas won its last title.
Of course, Italy had beaten France in the controversial World Cup final where Zinedine Zidane played his last game as a professional soccer player. The UEFA Champions League final was between Arsenal and FC Barcelona, where the Spanish side won 2-1 with goals from Juliano Belletti and Samuel Eto’o. George W. Bush was serving his second term as the president of the United States while Vicente Fox was serving his final days as the President of Mexico. Bush is enjoying his retirement and makes some appearances at Texas Rangers games while Vicente Fox makes appearances on TV, on several networks both in the US and in Mexico talking about politics.
Some of the top songs back when Ramon Morales was lifting up the eleventh title for Chivas include “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter, “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt and “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira. Out of the three artists the Colombian, Shakira is the only one who has managed to stay in the spotlight. From music to movies, some of the top grossing movies from over a decade ago included Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Night at the Museum and Cars. Ironically both Pirates of the Caribbean and Cars will have new installments to their franchises later this year. From the big screen to the TV screen there were no surprises as American Idol and Dancing with the Stars were some of the most-watched shows on TV in 2006.
In terms of technology, the world has changed dramatically since Guadalajara saw the glory. The last time Los Tapatios were crowned champions the iPhone did not exist yet and phones like the Motorola Razr and the BlackBerry were all the rage. One of the biggest gadgets at the time was the Nintendo Wii which many people saw as the future of gaming. The Wii was popular because it allowed players to do some exercise while playing which became popular with more than just the millennials. Since then, Nintendo has released the Wii U and the Switch which have strayed away from what the Wii was like in 2006 and have stayed more like traditional gaming.
Some of the top news stories over a decade ago included Pluto being classified as a Dwarf Planet rather than a Planet, the execution of Saddam Hussein, and Google buying YouTube for 1.65 Billion dollars. The world was very different in 2006 and Chivas have been looking for another Liga MX title since then. Chivas is going into this Clausura 2017 final as the underdogs unlike that final against Toluca but will try to replicate that performance for their twelfth Liga MX championship.
