James Rodriguez signed with Real Madrid in 2014 for a major transfer fee, but the 25 year old Colombian superstar has yet to fully live up to expectations during his Real Madrid career. After being reduced to a part-time role in recent seasons, there are reports (Express) that Rodriguez could be on his way to a new club this summer.
The report claims that Manchester United is extremely interested in James, and they would likely be one of the frontrunners to sign him, if Real Madrid do choose to sell him in the summer transfer window.
Rodriguez has reportedly said he is willing to stay at Real Madrid next season, but his current club may have to increase his playing time and/or salary in order to make that happen. If Real refuse to meet these demands, then Rodriguez would reportedly want to be sold to a new club.
Although Rodriguez’s playing time was somewhat limited by manager Zinedine Zidane, James did play well when he got his opportunity last season. In only 12 starts (and 8 substitute appearances) in La Liga matches, Rodriguez managed to score 8 goals and tally 6 assists. Rodriguez also finished the season second on the team in key passes per game, only behind Toni Kroos.
Considering that Rodriguez is not a consistent starter, it would seem that Real Madrid would be willing to sell James for the right price. Manchester United certainly showed they have an ability to spend big, after acquiring Paul Pogba last summer, but given that Rodriguez has struggled for playing time at Real Madrid, it is unlikely that Manchester United will overpay for the playmaker.
It is still very possible that Rodriguez makes the move to Manchester United this summer, but a deal is far from a sure thing at this stage.
