In the quarterfinals of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Santos Laguna will host Toluca at the Estadio Corona TSM this Wednesday, May 10, 2017 (7:30 PM Pacific). The match is set to be an exciting clash as both teams just played each other in a thrilling contest that resulted in a 2-2 game.
Santos Laguna finished in fifth place with 26 points and finished with the third-best offense in the tournament with 25 goals. While Los Guerreros did draw 2-2 against Toluca this past Sunday, the draw felt more like a defeat as two key players for Jose Manuel de la Torre were red carded. Djaniny Tavares and Walter Gael Sandoval will be absent from this game because of red cards in that previous encounter between the two teams.
Tavares and Sandoval had been two of the most impactful players on Santos Laguna going forward and their absence will be a tremendous loss. The Celestial Warriors have not lost in eight straight league games and will be a tough team to beat in La Liguilla.
Toluca finished in fourth place with 27 points and was a solid team that had its flaws. Los Diablos have not won in five consecutive games and will also have a key absence in the game. The midfielder, Jesus Mendez was red carded in the final match of the regular season against Santos Laguna and will miss this game. Rubens Sambueza who is now available after a lengthy suspension will be available for the match and could slot in the lineup to solidify the midfield. There is no player that has stood out for Hernan Cristante in this tournament but Pablo Barrientos has emerged in the last few weeks.
The Argentine does offer a lot of flair and vision going forward and is an important player to Toluca’s attack. Hernan Cristante does count with a wealth of experience on his team with many veterans all over the pitch which could be very valuable in the playoffs. The match should be a close encounter between two very talented sides who are looking to fight for the title.
