In week 16 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Club America will host Atlas at the Estadio Azteca this Saturday, April 29, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). The match should be an entertaining clash with both teams wanting to get the three points from the game for their respective playoff pushes.
Club America started off the Clausura 2017 slowly but is regaining its form with the absence of some key players. The Mexico City team is still not in an ideal position for its standards, currently in sixth place with 24 points. The ‘aguilas’ are coming from a huge 2-1 loss to Santos Laguna away from home where a goal in stoppage time proved to be the difference in the encounter. Ricardo La Volpe will be missing some key players like Pablo Aguilar and Cecilio Dominguez.
Dominguez especially is a key blow to the Mexico City team now having to rely heavily on the 16-year-old, Diego Lainez in midfield. The return of Paul Aguilar does help solidify a weakened defense for America but the Mexican international must slowly regain his form. The match can prove to be complicated for Club America against a strong Atlas side.
Atlas is coming off a surprising 1-0 victory over Pachuca in week 15 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017. Matias Alustiza has been a key player for the ‘rojinegros’, getting his seventh goal of the competition in that game against Pachuca. Alustiza has been part of what has been a surprisingly potent offense for the ‘zorros’ having the third-best offense in the Liga MX with 22 goals.
Jose Guadalupe Cruz has led his team to 23 points so far, Atlas currently in seventh place. That will almost certainly will not be enough for Atlas to reach the playoffs and the ‘rojinegros’ should aim to get some points from the remaining two games in the Liga MX. This is an important encounter for both teams and that should make for an exciting clash at the Estadio Azteca
