In week 16 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Veracruz will host Monterrey at the Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente this Friday, April 28, 2017 (6:30 PM Pacific). Monterrey has already secured a playoff spot, while Veracruz is looking to secure salvation from relegation.
Veracruz is currently in 13th place with 18 points and oddly enough still has a chance at making the playoffs. The playoffs are the least of Juan Antonio Luna’s worries, however as the ‘tiburones’ are in an intense relegation battle with Chiapas and Morelia. The ‘escualos’ are currently one point ahead of Chiapas and two points ahead of Morelia on the relegation table.
At the beginning of week 15, Veracruz was last on the relegation table but an enormous, unlikely 2-0 victory against Pumas UNAM away from home gave hope to the ‘tiburrones’. The ‘jarochos’ have been successful at home, obtaining five victories at the “Pirata” Fuente. Juan Antonio Luna will look to utilize that home-field advantage and get a favorable result from this match.
Monterrey has been one of the best teams in this Clausura, currently in second place with 27 points. It is unclear whether Antonio Mohamed will decide to rest some key players, having already secured a playoff spot. But knowing Mohamed it is likely that the Argentine will utilize a complete squad and will go for the three points from the encounter. The ‘rayados’ do have one of the deadliest attacks in the Liga MX having scored 25 goals this tournament with potent players like Edwin Cardona, Rogelio Funes Mori and Dorlan Pabon leading the way. The ‘regios’ are coming from a monumental victory having beaten archrivals, Tigres UANL 1-0.
Monterrey has momentum and motivation coming into this encounter but does have one slight downfall. Monterrey has struggled massively away from home in this Clausura, only winning one game away from the Estadio BBVA Bancomer. Veracruz has proven to be a tough place to play in the Liga MX and it could be a tough match for Antonio Mohamed and company. The match should be a thrilling encounter to kick off the penultimate week of the Liga MX Clausura 2017.
