In week 15 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Pumas UNAM will host Veracruz at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario this Sunday, April 23, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific). Pumas UNAM is fighting for a playoff berth while Veracruz is fighting to remain in the Liga MX which should produce an enticing duel.
Pumas UNAM had a great start to this Clausura 2017 but have tailed off in recent weeks, unable to get a win in its last three league games. In week 14 the felines fell 4-0 to Tigres UANL away from home and are now in 11th place with 18 points. The Mexico City team has suffered some key injuries and will be without Pablo Barrera for the rest of the season. Top scorer, Nicolas Castillo has been absent since week 11 of the competition but is set to return in this game against Veracruz.
Paco Palencia has missed the Chilean striker as Pumas has only been able to score one goal in its last three games. Matias Britos has proved to be a viable option but he is nowhere near as clinical as Castillo. There is no room for error for the ‘universitarios’ in their remaining games as they must win at least two of them to have a shot at a playoff berth.
Veracruz is not in the hunt for a playoff spot but is in the fight to remain in the Liga MX currently in a contested relegation battle. The ‘tiburones’ are the bottom-feeders on the relegation table currently with 111 points, just a point behind Monarcas Morelia and Chiapas. Veracruz has failed to secure even one point on the road this year, losing all seven games away from the Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente. The match should be an entertaining one with both teams having big motives to obtain the three points.
