In week 14 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Puebla will host Cruz Azul at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc this Sunday, April 16, 2017 (4:00 PM Pacific). Both teams still have a lot to play for in this tournament and should deliver an enticing duel.
Puebla is currently in last place with 10 points, not having won in its last five games, losing four out of the five encounters. The ‘camoteros’ are still in discussion for relegation currently four points ahead of Veracruz, who is at last, on the relegation table. If Veracruz, Morelia and Chiapas can accumulate points and Puebla keeps on losing Jose Cardozo may be in for some trouble. The players are obviously lacking concentration based on the ridiculous error by the goalkeeper, Cristian Campestrini which gave Chivas a 3-2 win over Puebla in week 13.
The last place team has also been plagued with disciplinary issues with four red cards this Clausura, including one to Francisco Acuna in their latest match against Veracruz. The loss of Acuna in this game will be a big blow for ‘la franja’ as he has provided good options going forward with the team. Puebla should be able to give a solid performance in this match but could struggle even in front of the home support.
Cruz Azul has been the biggest disappointment this tournament, currently in 14th place with 14 points under Paco Jemez at the helm. The playoffs seem like an illusion at this point for ‘la maquina’ even coming off a shocking 2-0 away win against Toluca in their latest fixture. The ‘cementeros’ biggest problem has been their inability to be clinical in front of net, collectively only accumulating 12 goals good for second worst in the Liga MX.
The Mexico City team still has a very slim almost non-existent chance of making the playoffs, a win here would be necessary to continue to have a chance at making the playoffs. The match should be a hard-fought encounter between two sides that have struggled to score this Clausura, so not expect many goals but expect a solid match.
