According to The Independent, Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross is reportedly a target of Newcastle United.
With the Magpies likely to be promoted to the Premier League, the experience of Shawcross will be a good addition to the side in order to smoothen their transition back to the top flight.
Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles have been the Magpies regular defenders this season and Benitez will be looking to bring in competition for the duo.
Despite Shawcross still being a key player for Mark Hughes side, he has not yet signed a contract extension and with only one year remaining on his current deal, this will encourage Rafael Benitez that a deal is possible.
Since signing from Manchester United in 2007, Shawcross has made 374 appearances for Stoke. Based on the experience of Shawcross and the fact that he is still a solid performer for his side, it will not be a wise decision to sell him, however it remains to be seen whether Mark Hughes will offer him a contract extension.
