According to reports Celtic are eyeing a swoop for Steaua Bucharest midfielder Ovidiu Popescu and the owner of Steaua, George Becali has also confirmed that talks over a transfer have been held with the Scottish giants.
The Hoops reportedly closely monitored the Romania international during Steaua’s match against Dinamo Bucharest during the weekend. After joining Steaua from Poli Timisoara last year for £200,000, Popescu has become arguably one of the best players in the Romanian League.
Becali has also claimed that he will one day be worth £25 million one day. Celtic should be able to complete a deal should they offer the right terms to Steaua, however it remains to be seen whether they will agree to the £8 million which Steaua will demand.
Becali sad, “Celtic came to watch him at the weekend and we’ve talked.”There has already been an offer for him, although I won’t say from which club it was from.”
“He has a release clause which isn’t unrealistic. Anderlecht paid us £8million for Nicolae Stanciu and Ovidiu is just as good…probably better actually.”
