In the CONMEBOL 2018 World Cup Qualifiers, Venezuela will host Peru at the Estadio Monumental de Maturin this Thursday, March 23, 2017 (4:30 PM Pacific). Venezuela does not have much to play for anymore but Peru is still in contention for a World Cup spot.
Venezuela has been one of the worst teams in this CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying stage, currently in last place with five points. Rafael Dudamel’s side has won one game, a 5-0 victory over Bolivia and has also drawn two games, one a shocking 2-2 draw to Argentina and the other a 2-2 draw to Peru.
Both opposing teams in those respective games had to come from behind to get a result against Venezuela. The main player to look out for on Venezuela will be Josef Martinez of MLS side, Atlanta United, who has five goals in this competition so far. The game will be a difficult one for ‘la vinotinto’, but an upset is not out of the question.
Peru is on a solid run, only having lost one game out of its last five, this would include three victories coming against Bolivia, Ecuador and Paraguay. The ‘Incas’ are currently in eighth place with 14 points, six points away from a spot in the 2018 World Cup. Ricardo Gareca will count with four players from the Liga MX in Pedro Gallese, Luis Advincula, Andy Polo and Raul Ruidiaz.
The most interesting members of ‘la blanquirroja’ will be the strike partnership of Christian Cueva and Paolo Guerrero who have three goals each and work very well together. This match is a must win for Peru if they wish to continue with their World Cup aspirations. The match should be a hard-fought encounter, with Peru having the extra motivation to get the three points from the game.
