In an international friendly match, the Republic of Ireland will host Iceland at the Aviva Stadium this Tuesday, March 28, 2017 (11:45 AM Pacific). Both teams are doing well in the UEFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers and should make for an exciting encounter on Tuesday.
The Republic of Ireland is coming from an intense match-up against Wales in the qualifiers which ended in a 0-0 draw. The Boys in Green did benefit from that point, now in second place in Group D of the competition with 11 points, just behind on goal differential to Serbia in first.
Martin 0’Neill will count with a squad made up mostly of players that play in England. 20 out of the 22 players on this Irish squad play in either the EPL or the Championship with some of the standouts being Shane Long and James McClean. Other intriguing players for Martin O’Neill include a pair of players from Preston North End in the skillful, Aiden McGeady and Darryl Horgan. The Green Army has an experienced core of players and should be able to provide an entertaining match for the home fans.
Iceland also had a positive result in the UEFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers this past weekend, defeating Kosovo away from home 2-1. The Vikings are currently doing well in the qualifiers, currently in second in Group I of the tournament, three points back of Croatia in first.
Iceland does carry some great players on its roster like captain, Aron Gunnarsson of Cardiff City, Jón Daði Böðvarsson of Wolverhampton and Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson, who scored against Kosovo over the weekend. Head coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson could also use this game to give opportunities to the younger players on the squad like 20-year-old forward, Ottar Magnus Karlsson. The game should be a hard-fought match between two surging teams in Europe that are doing well in the World Cup qualifiers.
