Tottenham and Arsenal battle to sign 22-year-old German international

Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle their North London rivals Arsenal for the signature of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka after the midfielder rejected a new contract offer with the Bundesliga side with only a year remaining, according to the Sun.

Arsenal will be looking to bolster their squad during the summer given that there is uncertainty over the futures of Alexis Sanchez as Mesut Oezil. Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin have also been unconvincing in their displays this season.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to add the talented German international to his squad as he looks to challenge for trophies next season.

Moussa Sissoko has failed to justify the £30 million that the North London club paid for him during the summer and they could use the funds generated from the potential sale of the French international to lure Goretzka to White Hart Lane.

Gorezka has been a key player for the Schalke side this season but is reportedly unhappy at the club as they are struggling to secure European football.
