In the UEFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Romania will host Denmark at the Cluj Arena this Sunday, March 26, 2017 (11:45 AM Pacific). The two teams are fighting in a contested Group E of the qualifying stage and need the three points from the match which should make for an intense encounter.
Romania is currently in fourth place in Group E of the competition with five points, just two points back of Montenegro in second and five points back of Poland in first. The ‘tricolorii’ beat Armenia, 5-0 and tied against Kazakhstan and Montenegro to gain the five points in this qualifying stage. The defense has been a key component to Christophe Daum’s team, only conceding a goal in their last three matches in this competition.
The main contributor offensively has been Adrian Popa of English side, Reading, who has scored two goals so far. Romania should be able to give a good showing in what should be a hard-fought match.
Denmark is currently in third place in this Group E with six points, having lost to Montenegro and Poland and having beaten Armenia and Kazakhstan. On paper, the Danish side does appear to be the stronger team with players like Kasper Schmeichel, Martin Braithwaite and Christian Eriksen. The Leicester City goalkeeper, Schmeichel has been in top form with his club having some amazing performances.
Most notably, in Champions League play, Schmeichel saved a penalty in each leg of the fixture against Sevilla in the round of 16. Christian Eriksen has also shined this season with Tottenham, scoring 10 goals in all competitions and being one of the main playmakers in the EPL with 10 assists in the competition. The match is a must-win for both sides, to keep their World Cup aspirations alive. It should be an intense encounter, fueled by the motivation of the players this Sunday in Romania.
