Newcastle United reportedly keen on surprise move for Premier League midfielder

According to reports, Newcastle United are interested in signing Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield. The 28 year old will have one year left on his contract at the end of the season and has yet to renew his current deal at Turf Moor.

Since arriving at Burnley from Huddersfield in 2013, the Canada international has been a vital part of The Clarets, only missing out on five of the 159 League matches which the side have played in since then.

Though Arfield was born in Scotland and started his career with Falkirk, he has chosen to represent Canada which is the land of his father’s birth in international competition. Arfield seems settled at Burnley and one would favor him to sign an extension with his current club over signing for a new team.

Though he is a solid performer, he does not possess the dynamism that Rafa Benitez will seek ahead of the next Premier League season, which the Magpies are likely to compete in. Benitez is better off signing Christian Atsu on a permanent basis from Chelsea.
