Sunderland legend Mickey Gray has said that Jermain Defoe should have left the Black Cats in January to join West Ham United.

Despite Sunderland struggling this season and in last position on the League standings, Defoe has been one of the few bright sparks in the team and netted 14 Premier League goals this season. His form earned him a call-up to the England national team for their upcoming matches against Germany and Lithuania.

Gray said during his interview with Talk Sport, “I’m sure he’s as frustrated as every other Sunderland supporter that things just aren’t changing at the club.

“There was interest I think from West Ham in January. I thought he should have went if that interest was there, because I just looked at Sunderland and I couldn’t see us getting out of the situation that we’re in at the minute. I know we’ve done it in the past but this time around I think it’s one step too far.”

Defoe has admitted that he would like to play in the World Cup next year and should Sunderland be relegated, he will have to join a new club to boost his international aspirations.
