In an International Friendly match, Germany will host England at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany this Wednesday, March 22, 2017 (12:45 PM Pacific). The match will be in preparation for the 2018 World Cup European Qualifiers that will take place over the weekend.
The German national football team is currently in a transitional phase with the last figure of a generation of German football on his way out. Lukas Podolski will play his last game representing his country this Wednesday. Podolski’s last game will mark the end of an era of German football characterized by players like Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phillip Lahm.
The new era still led by manager Joachim Low is starting to take shape with seven players 23 or younger on this squad. These seven players are Niklas Sule, Joshua Kimmich, Emre Can, Julian Weigl, Leroy Sane, Julian Brandt and Timo Werner. Joachim Low will be without a few of his stars for this match as Julian Draxler, Mario Gomez, Mesut Ozil and Manuel Neuer are out with injuries. The 2014 World Cup champions will still count with a strong core of experienced players like Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller. The Western European side will go into the match as the favorites, especially with the heavy home support in Dortmund.
The England National football team is also in a transitional phase with manager, Gareth Southgate seeming like a long-term option for the team. Several intriguing players received the call for the Three Lions, with Gareth Southgate looking for the best players possible ahead of the tougher fixtures that will come. Two players who had never been called up for England received the call, in James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.
Another interesting addition to the squad was Jermaine Defoe who has been one of the few bright spots for Sunderland this season with 14 goals. Other standout players for England ahead of this match include Adam Lallana, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy. The game should serve to see what players will be used by both managers in upcoming qualifiers and it should be interesting to see the crowd at the Signal Iduna Park as well.
