Coach praises Newcastle United flop

Matz Sels has not enjoyed the best of times since being brought to the club by Rafa Benitez during the summer.

He has failed to establish himself as first choice and currently lies as third choice behind Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot. With Tim Krul set to return during the summer, the 25-year-old could further slip down to fourth choice.

He has been playing for the club’s under-23 side in order to gain match practice and be ready if he is needed. Coach of the Magpies under-23 side, Peter Beardsley was full of praise for the Belgium international and said.

Beardsley said: “Matz couldn’t do anything with either of the goals. The first was a penalty, and the second was a clear header – it was bad marking from us.

“He was outstanding. He made some great saves, some great blocks, kicks the ball well, and he plays how we want him to play.”
