Aston Villa got another win, a third in fourth matches in the month of March, to take them to 51 points.
That total has them 11 above 22nd place Blackburn, who currently have the unenviable last relegation spot. And they almost ensured that Wigan would be moving down to League One as well, eliminating another potential rival.
Given that Villa were already eight points clear ahead of the match, it would have been crazy to suggest they’d end up relegated with just seven matches remaining, but this is football and you never quite know. But Steve Bruce’s men have just about ensure safety, and they now look good for a top half finish.
They currently sit in 12th place at the moment, and tenth is well within their reach if results continue to go their way.
The big thing for them is to build some cohesion and chemistry ahead of next season as promotion will surely be the only acceptable outcome. For now, they will go on break and then prepare for the visit of Norwich City on April Fool’s Day.
