In week 11 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Chivas of Guadalajara will host Veracruz at the Estadio Chivas this Saturday, March 18, 2017 (8:06 PM Pacific). The game is set to be the biggest mismatch of this week 11 with Chivas coming into the game as the clear favorites.
Guadalajara is riding high currently in first place with 17 points, ahead of Pachuca in second place due to goal differential. Matias Almeyda’s side is coming from one of their most convincing victories of this Clausura, having beat Toluca 2-0 at home in week 9 of the competition. Before that big victory, Chivas had a big meltdown, losing 4-3 to Chiapas in the ‘jornada’ 8. The goats were up 2-0 at halftime, and gave up three goals in four minutes, to eventually lose the game 4-3.
Alan Pulido did score both goals in Guadalajara’s 2-0 win over Toluca, but has been not been Matias Almeyda’s best player, with Orbelin Pineda and Rodolfo Pizarro stepping up for the ‘rebaño sagrado’. The pair has combined for five goals and two assists this tournament, Pizarro being the main goal scorer for Chivas with four goals. The ‘tapatios’ should come out on top in this encounter but could fail if they produce a performance like they did against Chiapas.
Veracruz has been a topic of controversy this Clausura with altercations between the fans and problems within the front office and players. Head coach, Carlos Reinoso will not be on the sidelines for this match, out indefinitely because of health problems. The ‘jarochos’ seemed doomed to relegate this season, with all their problems and now in last place on the relegation table with 105 points. The ‘tiburones’ are coming from four consecutive scoreless losses, and will not have it any easier in this match away from home against the current ‘superlideres’.
The last time Veracruz scored and won a match came in week 5 of the tournament against Chiapas, Eduardo Herrera and Kristian Alvarez scoring the goals in that match. This game seems like an inevitable loss for the team fighting relegation, but it should be a hard-fought encounter at the Estadio Chivas this Saturday.
