In week 30 of the French Ligue 1, Bordeaux will host Montpellier at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux this Saturday, March 18, 2017 (12:00 PM Pacific). Both teams need the three points from the match for distinct reasons and that should make for a great clash in this fixture.
Bordeaux has had a solid campaign in sixth place with 43 points, three points behind Marseille in fifth and seven points behind Lyon in fourth. The Navy-and-Whites are coming from a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Monaco in week 29 of the competition. But before that had been on a strong run of form, undefeated in four consecutive games in all competitions. Uruguayan striker, Diego Rolan scored the lone goal of the game for the Girondins, coming off the bench. The goal was his sixth of the season in the Ligue 1, and maybe Rolan can be given more of an opportunity as the season goes on. Of course, 22-year-old, Gaetan Laborde has done a fine job in that striker role providing four goals and four assists in 15 games as a starter in the Ligue 1.
Defense has also been an important aspect of Bordeaux’s game, only allowing three goals in its last two Ligue 1 games. This might seem like an average stat but those two games were against Monaco and Lyon which have been two of the best offenses in Europe. Goalkeeper, Cedric Carrasso has also been doing a fantastic job, having five clean sheets in only 15 games this season. Bordeaux should be able to win this match, especially at home, but Montpellier can always prove to be a tough side to face.
Montpellier is currently still in the relegation race in 15th place with 33 points, only five points ahead of Nancy in 18th. While the team from southern France does seem to be safe from relegation, it is still a highly-contested battle to evade relegation in the Ligue 1. ‘La Paillade’ are currently in a rough run of form, not having won a game in their last three league games. This would include a tough loss to Nice, where Montpellier would have a 1-0 lead up until the 68th minute of the encounter, the game finished 2-1 in favor of Nice. Montpellier’s last victory in the Ligue 1 was a 2-1 victory against Saint-Etienne in week 26.
Despite the team’s lack of form recently, a player who has been in form for Montpellier in this run, is Steve Mounie. The Beninese striker is currently one of the most inform striker in Europe having scored in five consecutive Ligue 1 matches. The 22-year-old forward has had a fantastic season scoring 13 goals for Montpellier and will need to perform in this match for ‘La Paillade’ to come away with a favorable result. The three points of the game are important for both teams, Bordeaux fighting for a spot in Europe and Montpellier fighting relegation. The match should be an intriguing one in this week 30 of the French Ligue 1.
