In what should be a contested match in the round of 16 in the Copa MX, Necaxa will host Santos Laguna at the Estadio Victoria this Wednesday, March 8, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). The first time these two met this year was in week 8 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, the match ended in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
Necaxa has had a tough Clausura 2017 tournament in penultimate place with nine points. The Copa MX has been a solid showing so far for the ‘rayos’, having finished first in group 5 with seven points. Necaxa has used a strong side in the Copa MX made up of some new signings that came in for this Clausura, who have not been consistent starters in the Liga MX.
Some of the standouts being Maximiliano Barreiro and Nicolas Maturana, who have scored a goal each in the competition. Another interesting player has been Diego Riolfo who has featured in all four games and has scored three goals. Alfonso Sosa has not shown that this tournament is a priority and will most likely keep on rotating the squad for this match.
Jose Manuel de la Torre has shown interest in the Copa MX, despite rotating the squad, ‘chepo’ has used some regular Liga MX starters like Nestor Araujo, Julio Furch and Carlos Izquierdoz. Furch came up big in week 6 of the competition, getting two goals against Club America, in Santos’ 2-1 win against the ‘aguilas’.
That win ensured Santos Laguna a place in the round of 16, finishing first in group 3 of the competition. It would not be a surprise if Jose Manuel de la Torre uses several if not all his regular Liga MX starters in this match. The game should be a hard-fought contest this Wednesday, between two solid Liga MX sides.
