In the round of 16 in the Copa MX Monterrey will host Mineros de Zacatecas at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer this Tuesday, March 7, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). The match-up is a bit of a mismatch, but should present a solid game in this first round of the playoffs in the Copa MX.
Monterrey was arguably the best team in the Copa MX, undefeated with four wins, scoring 13 goals and only allowing one goal. The ‘rayados’ were arguably in a fairly easy group with Juarez and Sinaloa, accompanying them. Two huge victories for Monterrey in the group came against Sinaloa, beating the second division side, 5-1 and 5-0.
Antonio Mohamed made it very clear that the Copa MX is of some importance utilizing some of his best players throughout the tournament like Edwin Cardona, Rogelio Funes Mori and Dorlan Pabon. The Argentine, Funes Mori, was one of the top goalscorers in the competition with three goals. Monterrey is one of the favorites to take the Copa MX and should have no problem getting past Zacatecas.
Mineros de Zacatecas came into the round of 16 as kind of a surprise, beating Atlas 3-0 in the final week of the group stage play in the Copa MX. The Mineros finished in second place of group 4 in the Copa MX, with two Liga MX sides in the group with Puebla and Atlas. Zacatecas is doing well in the Ascenso MX in third place with 19 points, only two back of Sinaloa in first.
Zacatecas has the best defense in the Ascenso MX, having only allowed six goals in 11 weeks, in the Copa MX, the defense was also solid only allowing three goals. The back line led by captain, Noe Maya will need to be strong in this game against the best offense in the tournament, with Monterrey. The game should be a solid one, even with Monterrey going into the game as heavy favorites.
