Sunderland boss David Moyes believes the role of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in helping the club avoid relegation this season is as vital as that of star forward Jermain Defoe.
The 34-year-old Defoe has been a crucial reason as to why the Black Cats have managed to avoid relegation during the past two seasons and will once again have to play a key role if they avoid the drop this season.
However manager Moyes thinks that the talented Pickford will also have to play a key role this season.
Moyes said of the 22-year-old, “To have a top goalkeeper, he can make the difference and we are really fortunate. We have a top centre-forward scoring, and we have also got a top goalkeeper, which we have needed.”
Sunderland are at the bottom of the table and if they hope to get something out of the game against Manchester City on Sunday, good performances from Pickford and Defoe will be vital.
