Newcastle midfielder Christian Atsu has admitted he got lucky while providing the assist for the winning goal against Brighton on Tuesday night which was scored by Mo Diame.
Mo Diame netted in the 89th minute under unusual circumstances as Atsu’s shot ricocheted off his boot and flied over Brighton shot stopper David Stockdale.
Atsu admitted that he did not intend to pass the ball to Diame and benefitted from being lucky as reported by The Shields Gazette.
“I can’t really pretend that I meant to do that,” he said, “but I will take the assist, and I am very happy for Mo that he scored. I meant the one for Ayoze (Perez), though!”
The Magpies had been trailing their fellow promotion chasers after Glenn Murray converted from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, before staging a comeback in the final ten minutes of the game.
The win means that they overtake the Seagulls and how occupy first place on the Championship standings.
