The second-leg of the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League between Pumas UNAM and Tigres UANL will be played this Wednesday, March 1, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario. The first match between the two ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Nuevo Leon, with Pumas getting the important away goal in that match.
Pumas UNAM started off great in the Clausura 2017, but is now starting to get several unfavorable results. The ‘universitarios’ have not won in their last five matches in all competitions, this includes the first-leg of this match-up. The felines have shown, however, that they are still a quality team that gives a good match to any opponent. Most notably scoring three goals in 10 minutes against Club Tijuana to draw against them 3-3 in week 7 of the Liga MX.
The alarming thing from this span of games is that Paco Palencia’s side has allowed 11 goals, including four against Queretaro in week 8 of the competition. The Pumas can be strong defensively, but because of the age of the center-backs, may be slow at times to recover the ball. Matias Britos has been an exciting player for Paco Palencia as of late providing two goals in the last two matches.
The Uruguayan striker scored the lone goal against Tigres UANL in the first-leg of this match-up and should be an interesting player in this game. Home-field advantage will of course be a strong factor in favor of the Pumas, not having lost in C.U. this tournament, scoring eight goals in four matches. It will be interesting to see if that will be the deciding factor for this quarter-final, or if Tigres can pull off the victory away from home.
It has not been an ideal tournament for the current-champions in 15th place with only eight points. Most recently the felines drew to relegation side, Monarcas Morelia 1-1 at home. 2017 has not been kind to Tigres UANL as the team has only won one out of its last six games in all competitions. The positive is that Andre-Pierre Gignac is starting to find the back of the net again scoring now in two consecutive games in the Liga MX.
Eduardo Vargas will also be an intriguing player to watch in the game as he did start and score for Ricardo Ferretti in the first-leg between the two teams. Luis Advincula has also been a solid player for the felines, starting in the last three games and really solidifying the defense providing good coverage with his rapid pace. Tigres UANL has one of the best rosters on the continent and should be able to not only win this game, but win the CONCACAF Champions League. The game will be interesting with the winner of the game becoming the favorite to win the whole tournament.
