For a time, Christopher Samba was one of the most imposing center backs (and occasionally emergency striker) in the Barclay’s Premier League. Now, he’s had a bit of a poor run of things and is currently on trial with Aston Villa.
Steve Bruce, speaking to the Birmingham Mail, has given an update on the situation. Bruce said “we are delighted that he’s here. I think it would be wrong to say it’s a trial.” He then said “he wants to earn a contract with us and he’s been here for the past week.”
So which is it, Steve? Is it a trial or is it not? It certainly sounds like it is one. Not sure why he wouldn’t want to label it as such, but this is clearly what is going on here. Villa do need help defensively, but they would be crazy just to throw him into the lineup.
So, they are giving him a trial currently, which shouldn’t be something the Villa boss shies away from admitting. This just seems very odd in truth. Bruce’s behavior is starting to prove a little erratic. Might be the pressure just getting to him now.
If Samba could provide the aerial threat he once did, in the back and up front, he could be worth the chance. But it’s not looking likely as he’s failed in previous trial attempts.
