Rafael Benitez outlines Newcastle United’s transfer plans if promotion bid fails

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that his club will have just a single transfer plan even if they fail to win promotion back to the Premier League.

The Magpies had a low key January transfer window, which was surprising as they were reported to have been interested in bolstering the squad for the last quarter of the Championship as they aim to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Tim Krul and Ivan Toney departed on loan while Cheick Tiote left for China on a free transfer. The club are now setting aside transfer targets for the summer and Benitez has confirmed that targets will remain the same whether or not the team win promotion.

“The way we work is to prepare for the transfer window and we didn’t do anything in January,” he told the Chronicle.

“Now I am more focused on the players but the scouts are analysing big things for the future, watching games and filing reports. There will be future meetings to analyse the market.”
