In week 4 of the Copa Corona MX Alebrijes de Oaxaca will host Cruz Azul at the Instituto Tecnologico de Oaxaca this Wednesday, February 15, 2017 (6:30 PM Pacific). Both teams only have one point in this tournament and will be looking to get the three points from the match. The point that the teams do have came from a 1-1 draw between the two sides at the Estadio Azul.
Alebrijes de Oaxaca is coming from a tough 1-0 loss to Queretaro at home in week three of the competition. Oaxaca lost the encounter in the dying minutes of the match, in the 88th minute via a goal by Queretaro’s Edgar Benitez. Irving Rubirosa has been utilizing a young core of Mexican-born players in the Copa MX, with few players that have ever played in the Liga MX. Perhaps, the most interesting player on Oaxaca is former Atlante striker, Giancarlo Maldonado who did play against Cruz Azul in the first match between the two teams.
The Venezuelan striker has been excelling in the Ascenso MX competition, scoring three goals in three games as a starter. Oaxaca has also been solid in the Liga de Ascenso compiling 14 points to earn 6th place in the league. Irving Rubirosa’s men gave Paco Jemez and Cruz Azul a good fight in the first encounter between the two teams and should do the same in this match.
Cruz Azul is currently in a complicated state as Paco Jemez is severely under-performing with a very solid roster. ‘La maquina’ have not done well in the Liga MX or the Copa Corona MX, they are 14th in the liga MX and 18th in the Copa MX. In the Copa MX, first they fell to Queretaro 3-2, and then tied 1-1 to Alebrijes de Oaxaca at the Estadio Azul.
While Paco Jemez has been utilizing backup players, he does still possess a very strong squad. The standouts Jemez has used include Francisco Rodriguez, Francisco Silva, Martin Rodriguez and Martin Cauteruccio. With Cauteruccio and Martin Rodriguez now featuring in the Liga MX starting 11 for Jemez, it is unclear if he will play them for this match. Either way, this is a game that Cruz Azul and Paco Jemez want to be winning against a second division side.
