Sunderland duo Jordan Pickford and Jermain Defoe, who have been arguably the two bright sparks in an otherwise struggling club this season, are set to be honored for their performances – as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

Defoe who is the top scorer for the club with 14 goals will collect the North-East Football Writers Player of the Year award on Sunday night while Pickford will collect the young player of the year award.

Despite being 34-years-old, Defoe has been on sparkling form this season. Sunderland will definitely also continue to rely on his brilliance as they attempt to avoid relegation this season.

England under-21 international Pickford also was impressive in goal before an injury in December against Manchester United forced him on the sidelines.

Defoe will become the 37th winner of the Player of the year award and follows the footsteps of former Sunderland fan-favorites including Darren Bent, Kevil Phillips, Niall Quinn and Marco Gabbiadini.
