The final of the AFCON 2017 tournament between Egypt and Cameroon will be played this Sunday, February 5, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific) at the Stade d I’Amitie in Gabon. Burkina Faso secured third place in the competition and now it is time to find out who will represent Africa in the 2017 Confederations tournament.
Egypt has won the AFCON seven times, including in 1986 and 2008 where they defeated Cameroon in the final both times. The Pharaohs have been one of the best defenses of the tournament only having conceded one goal up to this stage of the competition. Hector Cuper’s backline is led by 44-year-old goalkeeper and captain, Essam El-Hadary, who has been with the national team since 1996.
The veteran goalkeeper has been a part of four AFCON winning sides throughout his career, most recently in 2010. Perhaps, the Egyptians’ biggest export to world football has been AS Roma’s star, Mohamed Salah, who is always a dangerous man in the attack and should be a key player to watch in this crucial game for the Northeastern-African side.
The Cameroonian national team also possessed one of the strongest defenses in the tournament, having only conceded two goals in the competition. The indomitable lions have also been successful in the competition having four titles to their name, most recently in 2002. Hugo Broos’ does carry several players who do militate on European sides, most notably in France’s Ligue 1 with six players on the roster pertaining to clubs from that league.
Perhaps, the most key player for the Central-Africans at this stage of the competition has been defender, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui. The man from Slavia Prague has been key in the indomitable lions’ defense and in their attack as well scoring two goals, including goal in the semi-final game against Ghana. The match is a must watch for any football fan and should bring us a hard-fought encounter for the coveted Confederation Cup spot.
