Week 3 of the Copa Corona MX will start with Atlas hosting Mineros de Zacatecas at the Estadio Jalisco this Tuesday, January 31, 2017. (5:00 PM Pacific). Both teams will be looking for the three points with Puebla now leading the group with four points after their win against Atlas in week 2.
Atlas are yet to sum up any points in the competition and it will be ‘do or die’ in this Copa MX match if they wish to continue in the competition. The Estadio Jalisco is a fortress for Atlas as they have not lost in a Liga MX game there since week 13 of the Clausura 2016. Jose Guadalupe Cruz counted with several talented players against Puebla in their debut in the Copa MX last week.
This would include Luis Robles, Rodolfo Salinas, Clifford Aboagye, Martin Barragan and Jahir Barraza. The ‘rojinegros’ utilized a very young core of players with six of the eleven starters not exceeding the age of 23. Even with younger, inexperienced players Atlas do possess an advantage over their second division rival.
Zacatecas started off their Copa MX campaign with a 1-1 draw against Puebla F.C. at home. The tying goal came very late in the encounter for Mineros, in the 88th minute of the match to be exact. Zacatecas did put up a good fight against Puebla in the encounter with the ‘camoteros’ utilizing several starters in their lineup. Zacatecas had mostly reserve players in their starting 11, leady by former Mexican-International, Jonny Magallon who captained the side.
Ricardo Rayas also counted with former Pachuca player, Jose ‘Shaggy’ Martinez on the bench, who came on and instantly made an impact for the team in that game. It is unclear whether Zacatecas will use their starters in this match or will continue with the squad they brought out against Puebla in week 1 of the competition.
