Newcastle reportedly fail with big money bid for Premier League star

With the transfer deadline day fast approaching, it has been reported by the Daily Mail that Everton have rejected a £16 million move for James McCarthy.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is reported to have informed the Magpies that the player will not be joining them despite not receiving regular game time.

The arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, return of Muhamed Besic from injury and return of Idrissa Gueye from the African Nations Cup all serve to further hamper McCarthy’s chances of first team action.

Newcastle had been hoping to add the 29-year-old to their squad as they attempt to win the Championship and gain instant promotion back to the Premier League next season.

They are currently two points behind Championship leaders Brighton and Hove Albion and hoped that McCarthy could have added extra options in midfield to Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden.

McCarthy may not join Newcastle now but if they really want him, they should be able to get him during the summer especially as he seemingly has no future with Everton.
