Bruce Arena will receive his first test as the USMNT Head Coach this Sunday, January 29, 2017 (1:00 PM Pacific) when the USMNT host the Serbia National team in a friendly match at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. While the US will count with many familiar faces and MLS stars, Serbia will see the game as a test for many of their young players.
The former LA Galaxy head coach received the opportunity to coach the USMNT last November, but is barely going into his first official match in charge this Sunday. USA will count with a pair of former Liga MX players in DeMarcus Beasley and Gregory Garza, and will also have the man who qualified Mexico into the 2014 World Cup, Graham Zusi on their squad. Some familiar faces like Michael Bradley, Nick Rimando, Jermaine Jones, Jozy Altidore, Sacha Kljestan, and Gyasi Zardes will also conform part of the US’s roster.
Liberian-born, Darlington Nagbe will also be an interesting player to watch as his rapid pace should go well against the young Serbian players. DeMarcus Beasley should be motivated to perform well in the game as he currently has no club team. Maybe a team will be interested in the 34-year-old after seeing his performance on the pitch.
This will be the first encounter between the US and Serbia, and the fan support for the US should be large as San Diego is looking to perhaps bring in an MLS team to the city. The Serbian national team will not count with their stars like Branislav, Ivanovic, Aleksander Kolarov, Lazar Markovic or Nemanja Matic. But instead will utilize a very young core of players with only two players exceeding the age of 25. Bruce Arena and the US team should not struggle in this game, and it will be interesting to see how Arena works with the USMNT.
