Another enticing match in this Week 4 of the Clausura 2017 will be Pumas UNAM hosting Necaxa at the Estadio Universitario this Sunday, January 29, 2017. (10: 00 AM Pacific). Pumas have been the more dominant of the two sides, but Necaxa did show that they can still compete in the league with their 1-0 victory over Pachuca in Week 3 of the competition. Both teams with distinct styles of play will look for the three points this weekend.
Paco Palencia and his men have looked sharp to start off this Clausura 2017, with six points in the competition against very tough opponents. Their two victories in the tournament have been huge, one being a 1-0 win over Cruz Azul at home, in Week 2 and the other being a 1-0 victory over Leon at the Estadio Leon in Week 3. The ‘universitarios’ should be able to beat the ‘rayos’ in this match but it will not be an easy task.
Pumas’ strong defense led by veterans Dario Veron and Gerardo Alcoba have been the most impressive component of their team, with youngsters like Alan Mendoza also stepping up. Nicolas Castillo will also be back in the lineup for Paco Palencia after serving his suspension for his two yellow cards in their match against Cruz Azul. The 23-year-old striker will be a key player to watch in this game.
Necaxa has really struggled to create scoring opportunities this season without their star man, Edson Puch, but did mark their first goal of the season last week via a ‘golazo’ by new signing, Maxi Barreiro. The Argentine forward will be Alfonso Sosa’s main player to create opportunities and open spaces in this tough match at Estadio Universiatario. It will be interesting to see how Sosa’s counter-attacking style of play will fair against Paco Palencia and Pumas.
