Two of Mexico’s most historic sides will face off in Week 2 of the Copa Corona MX when Chivas host Atlante at the Estadio Chivas this Tuesday, January 24, 2017. (7:00 PM Pacific). Atlante are coming off a solid 2-0 win against Merida in the first week of the Copa MX, while Matias Almeyda’s men had a bye week to kick off the competition. The three points are crucial for both teams if they wish to move forward to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Chivas are coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Xolos of Tijuana in Week 3 of the Liga MX. The ‘rojiblancos’ were the better team in the match but came away with nothing from the game other than possession of the ball and shots on goal. Matias Almeyda will bring out a strong side with players like Hedgardo Marin, Isaac Brizuela, Miguel Angel Ponce, Nestor Calderon, and Carlos Fierro.
The Argentine manager may even start Jose Juan Vazquez or Jair Pereira in the game due to their suspensions which kept them from playing over the weekend against Club Tijuana. Chivas are the favorites but they will face an offensive driven Atlante in this game.
Both teams rely on a heavy offensive style of play so there will be goals to be seen; Atlante has already marked 10 total goals in 2017. That would include four against last year’s Ascenso MX champions, Dorados this past weekend in the Jornanda 4 of the competition. The ‘potros’ did not utilize many of their starters against Merida in Week 1 of Copa MX play, but Eduardo Fentanes may consider using a few key players in Guadalajara.
So far Atlante’s standout player has been 25-year-old Francisco Uscanga who is their top goal scorer in the Ascenso MX with three goals. The team from Cancun are made up of mostly younger players who are yet to see the Liga MX but do carry former Liga MX players like Francisco Gamboa, Fernando Herrera and Fernando Espinoza. The game should be a thriller between two of the most historic teams in Mexican football, a must watch for this Jornada 2 of Copa MX.
