Week 3 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will offer some of the best match-ups of the tournament and that includes Cruz Azul hosting Monterrey at the Estadio Azul this Saturday, January 21, 2017 (3:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are favorites to reach the iguilla this season and can be considered dark horses to take the title as well. The ‘cementeros’ have had the best of the ‘rayados’ in the last four encounters, as they have tied two, and taken two from Antonio Mohamed’s men.
Cruz Azul is coming off two straight losses, one against Pumas in the Liga MX and one against Queretaro in the Copa MX. The ‘cementeros’ however, have played well so far this year and new signing Martin Cauteruccio scored in his debut with the club Wednesday against Queretaro in the Copa MX.
The Uruguayan striker will add depth for this Cruz Azul strike force and add more options for Paco Jemez as Cauteruccio is an aerial threat. Unfortunately for Cruz Azul, they will be without the heart of their midfield, Gabriel Peñalba as he will be serving a controversial red card suspension from last weekend.
While Cruz Azul is playing at home, the Estadio Azul is no imposing force like El Volcan or Estadio Caliente. Home field advantage will not play a role in this game, which should be a plus for this strong Monterrey side. The ‘regios’ have secured four points in the competition and have managed to score five goals.
Antonio Mohamed’s offense is one of the strongest in the Clausura with players like Dorlan Pabon, Rogelio Funes Mori, Edwin Cardona, and Yimi Chara leading the way. Their defense is where the ‘rayados’ may struggle having conceded four goals in two jornadas. This game should be an exciting and intense affair with many goals between two very smart managers in Antonio Mohamed and Paco Jemez.
