Santos Laguna will host Veracruz this Sunday, January 15, 2017 (4:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio TSM Corona in the final match during Week 2 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017. This game on paper is not the most attractive of the weekend but it should present us with an exciting match as in 2016 the teams split their two matches; both by a score of 2-0 for the respective winner.
The ‘Guerreros’ are not coming off the best result against Tigres UANL as they tied away by a score of 0-0. While the result seems good on paper, the current champions Tigres played with a team of mostly substitutes and reserves. Santos had a busy off-season as they made several signings, most notably that of Julio Furch and Osvaldo Martinez.
Furch and Martinez were active in the first week of the Clausura, but they did not contribute much to their team. One fresh signing which did make a difference for Santos over the weekend was Jonathan Orozco. The former ‘Rayados’ keeper helped Santos maintain a clean sheet against Tigres. Santos will need their offensive players to perform well in order to achieve a positive result this weekend.
Veracruz is coming off a surprising 1-0 victory against Queretaro F.C. in the first week of the Clausura 2017. Veracruz is fighting relegation this season with a completely different squad than they had in the Apertura 2016. Only three of Tiburones’ players from their starting lineup against Queretaro conformed part of their roster in the Apertura 2016; those players were Meliton Hernandez, Leobardo Lopez and Jesus Paganoni. Tiburones’ new side should provide a competitive game against Santos under the leadership of Carlos Reinoso.
