The second week of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will bring us another rivalry match, this time between Pumas UNAM and Cruz Azul. The two Mexico City teams will square off at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario this Sunday, January 15, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific). Both encounters that the teams had in 2016 ended in draws, yet Cruz Azul did win the two matches the teams played in 2015. The encounter should be very close and provide fans with many exciting plays.
Pumas is coming from an unjust 2-1 lost to Chivas of Guadalajara where the ‘universitarios’ played a strong match but luck against them gave took away points. Both goals that Chivas scored arguably come at fault to goalkeeper Alejandro Palacios due to bad positioning; at 35, the goalie may have seen his best days past him after a great Apertura 2016 season. Pumas do have a young core of players with 23-year old new signing Nicolas Castillo leading the attack.
The Clausura 2017 marks a new era for Cruz Azul with Spanish manager Paco Jemez at the helm. ‘La Maquina’ have also made many key signings for this season, most recently adding Uruguayan striker Martin Cauteruccio. The star forward will be available for Sunday’s match, but it remains to be seen whether Paco Jemez will start him. After a win last week against Necaxa, the ‘cementeros’ will face a strong contest which will mark the team’s form in this young season.
