Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is eyeing a double swoop at Everton during the January transfer window. The Mirror claims that the Spanish manager has identified Everton midfielders Tom Cleverley and James McCarthy as possible signings this month.
Benitez is hoping that the arrivals of two midfielders from the Merseyside club would reignite the Magpies’ promotion challenge, which has started to flounder following a run of eight games including four defeats.
The Magpies currently sit second in the second tier of English football, two points behind leaders Brighton. The Seagulls also have a game in hand on their main opponents for the league title.
The same report from The Mirror also revealed that Cleverley and McCarthy are not the only names on Benitez’s wish list. The former Liverpool manager is also keeping tabs on the likes of Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph and Brentford midfielder Alan Judge.
