The Apertura 2016 champions, Tigres UANL, will host Santos Laguna this Saturday, January 7, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Universitario in Nuevo Leon. The auriazules recently defeated Club America in dramatic fashion and won their second title in the past three seasons and will look to begin their new season with a win against the renovated laguneros at the start of the Liga MX Clausura 2017.
The team coached by Ricardo Ferretti is still in celebration-mode after their amazing playoff run which saw them win their fifth first division title last Christmas. Without any significant player transfers during their short off-season, Tigres has the core of their starting lineup intact, showing that they begin the season as strong favorites to defend their title. Led by Andre-Pierre Gignac, Tigres enters the game against Santos as the favorite to win and earn their first three points of the season.
Santos Laguna had a forgettable Apertura 2016 where they finished in 16th place after earning a 16 points. The team coached by Jose Manuel de la Torre hopes to turn their luck around this season yet earning points during their first visit will be extremely difficult against a team that became the champion only two weeks ago. The laguneros had several major transfers most notably the departture of goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin who left to Club America; that departure was covered with the signing of keeper Jonathan Orozco from Monterrey. The other four important signings are those of Ventura Alvarado, Osvaldo Martinez, Jorge Enriquez, and Julio Furch.
