This Saturday, January 7, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific) Monarcas Morelia will host Xolos of Tijuana at the Estadio Morelos during Week 1 of the Clausura 2017. Both teams will look to begin the new season with 3 points in a match where the visitors enter as slight favorites to win.
Monarcas will have several key debuts this Saturday most significantly seen on the sidelines as Argentine coach Pablo Marini will make his debut with the team from Michoacan after Enrique Meza left following a disappointing Apertura 2016. Aside from him, Morelia made several important player acquisitions like Gabriel Achilier from Emelec, Gerardo Rodriguez from Toluca, and Aldo Rocha from Leon. With these signings Monarcas will look to return to winning as last season they performed inadequately earning 20 points and finishing in 13th place.
Xolos of Tijuana had an outstanding Clausura 2016 in which they led the Liga MX with 33 points. That followed by a disappointing ‘liguilla’ where they lost to Leon in the quarterfinals ending their dream for a second title since their promotion into the first division in 2011. This off season saw Xolos lose several players to transfer as was the case with Gabriel Hauche leaving for Toluca, Kevin Gutierrez and Hector Villalba returning to their clubs after loan spells, Federico Vilar retiring, and Greg Garza and Juninho making MLS moves. In exchange, Xolos did not make any important signings meaning coach Miguel Herrera will look to perform successfully with the players he has on hand.
