Manchester United are showing serious interest in signing Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelöf and have already enquired about his availability, according to Sky Sports.
The report claims Lindelöf is Jose Mourinho’s transfer priority for the January transfer window, with the Portuguese manager impressed with the Sweden international’s speed and defensive ability.
Benfica are reportedly looking for a fee of £25m for the former Västeråsplayer.
However, the UK-based news outlet also claims United wouldn’t be able to sign Lindelöf in January if the Portuguese champions manage to qualify for the Champions League 1/8 finals next month.
Benfica have reportedly told United they won’t sell the 22-year-old centre-back in the middle of the season unless they fail to qualify from their group on December 6th.
The Portuguese giants are currently second in Group B, level on points with Napoli, and will face the Italians at home next month knowing that winning the game will secure them the group’s top spot.
The talented defender has cemented his place in Benfica’s starting eleven this season, having made 16 appearances in all competitions for Rui Vitoria’s side so far.
Even though his preferred position is in the heart of the defense, Lindelöf can also play at right-back, so the 22-year-old would definitely be a very useful addition to the United squad.
United would be disappointed if Benfica reach the next stage of the Champions League, but on the other hand Mourinho would have enough time to switch his attention towards another target if it comes to that.
